Sliding Glass Doors

The sliding screen is the door you actually touch from April through October. When the mesh is torn, the corners are popped, or the screen rollers have flat-spotted, people prop the glass door open or leave the screen off the track entirely. Bugs come in, and the main door’s weatherstripping takes a beating it was not designed for. Dynamic Innovations & Finishes rebuilds the screen: mesh, corners, rollers, and the track it rides in.

Symptoms homeowners notice

  • A tear, a pet hole, or mesh that has gone brittle and gray.
  • The screen jumps the track or drags so hard the latch will not meet.
  • Corners are separated and the rectangle is now a parallelogram.
  • Wheels are missing, and the bottom rail is scarred from being shoved.

What is actually failing

A sliding screen is a light aluminum or steel frame with spline-mounted mesh, corner gussets, a latch, and small rollers. The mesh fails first, especially standard fiberglass in a west exposure. Pets and kids finish the job. The frame fails next: a bumped corner opens, the diagonal grows, and the latch no longer reaches. Rollers the size of a coin flat-spot and the screen rides on the metal. We re-screen in the existing frame when the rectangle can be squared, using fiberglass, aluminum, or a pet-resistant polyester. When the corners are done, we build or fit a new screen frame to the day-size of the opening rather than asking a bent door to pretend it is square. Rollers and the screen track get the same attention as the glass door’s hardware, because a perfect mesh on dead wheels will be off the track by August.

Our repair process

We square the frame on a bench, replace bent corners, and roll new spline so the mesh tension is even, not drum-tight in the middle and slack at the edges. Tension that is too high warps a light rail; tension that is too low sags into the glass door. Rollers are swapped and adjusted so the screen sits parallel to the glass panel and the latch catches without a lift. If the screen track in the sill is packed or torn, we clean or replace that cap so both doors have a path. Pet mesh is offered where the hole pattern says a dog already voted. You should be able to run the screen with one finger and still see the yard.

Why repair beats replacement

A screen is a wear item in front of an expensive glass door. Replacing the entire sliding glass system because the screen is torn is how a small job becomes a renovation. Re-screening and new rollers put the ventilation back without touching the insulated glass, the lock, or the exterior brick. A new screen frame is still a fraction of a new patio door, and it keeps the opening you already flashed and trimmed.

Questions about screen doors

Can you re-screen a bent frame?

If we can square it and the rails are not kinked, yes. A rail with a crease gets a new frame so the mesh has a straight spline groove.

Is pet mesh darker?

It is a heavier weave, so the view is slightly tighter. It survives claws that destroy fiberglass in a week. We show you the difference before we spline it.

The screen hits the glass door. Is that a screen problem?

Often the glass door has dropped on worn rollers and the screen is innocent. We check both so you do not pay for a screen adjustment that the heavy door will undo.

Do you fix the closer or the latch only?

Yes. Latches, pulls, and closers are separate from the mesh. If that is all that failed, we do not re-screen a good panel just to pad the ticket.
