Sliding Glass Doors

Patio door glass is tempered safety glass. When it breaks it pebbles, and the opening is no longer a door. Even when the pane is intact, a failed insulated unit turns milky and stops doing the thermal work the wall was designed for. Dynamic Innovations & Finishes replaces the glass unit inside the existing sliding panel. The frame, the rollers, and the interior casing stay put.

Symptoms homeowners notice

  • A star, a hole, or a sheet of pebbled tempered glass after an impact.
  • Fog, a rainbow stain, or dirt that will not wipe off because it is between the panes.
  • A door that sweats or feels icy along the glass in January while the frame itself is dry.
  • Grids or a tint that no longer match the rest of the elevation after a previous cheap lite was dropped in.

What is actually failing

A sliding panel is a metal or vinyl rail around a sealed insulating glass unit, held by a glazing bead or a wrap-around vinyl. The unit is two lites of tempered glass, a spacer, a primary seal, and usually an argon fill with a Low-E coating on one surface. Impact breaks the temper. A slow leak at the seal lets moisture in, and the desiccant in the spacer cannot keep up, which is the fog you cannot clean. Neither failure means the panel frame is scrap. We order a new dual-pane unit to the day-size of the opening, with tempered glass on both lites, the coating facing the correct direction, and colonial grids only if the rest of the house has them.

Clear, bronze, gray, and Low-E are matched as closely as current glass runs allow. We tell you when an exact discontinued tint is gone and what the nearest safe match is, before the unit is built. Safety glazing is not optional on a patio door. Annealed glass does not belong in that opening, and we will not install it to save a few days.

Our repair process

Measure twice: width, height, and overall thickness, including the spacer color if you care about the sightline. The panel comes off the track the same way it does for a roller job, onto a padded bench. We pull the bead or the glazing vinyl, cut the old sealant, and lift the failed unit out. The glazing pocket is cleaned, new setting blocks go in so the glass does not sit on the metal, and the new unit is bedded and beaded. The panel goes back on its rollers, we check the height so the new, sometimes slightly different, weight still meets the lock, and we walk the door. If the rollers were already dead, we quote them with the glass so you are not paying a second trip to fix a door we just made heavier.

Why repair beats replacement

Tempered insulated glass is a manufactured part. The surrounding door is a wall assembly tied into brick, siding, or a condo balcony slab. Replacing only the unit keeps the HOA elevation, the interior drywall returns, and the hardware you already like. Full door replacement is the right call when the panel itself is bent or the sill is gone. A shattered or foggy lite, by itself, is a glass order.

Questions about sliding door glass

Is foggy patio door glass the same repair as a broken pane?

The install is similar, but a foggy unit is an intact tempered sandwich with a dead seal. A broken pane is a safety and security emergency, and we treat the scheduling that way.

Can you match the grids between the glass?

Yes, when we order the unit. Grids applied on the surface after the fact do not look like a factory muntin, and we do not use them as a substitute.

Do you have to replace both doors on a double slider?

No. We replace the failed panel’s glass. If the fixed lite next to it is clear and sealed, it stays.

How do I cover the opening while the glass is being made?

We can board or film a shattered opening the day we measure if the weather or the security risk cannot wait for the factory. The permanent unit goes in when it arrives, usually as its own appointment.
