Window screens fail quietly. The mesh yellows, a corner pops, a tab disappears, and then the sash is either unprotected or the screen is in the garage. Bugs, cottonwood seed, and a ragged look from the curb follow. Dynamic Innovations & Finishes rebuilds the screen you have, or builds a new frame to the opening when the old one is twisted, with mesh chosen for the exposure and the pets.
Symptoms homeowners notice
- Holes, a long tear, or mesh that powders when you touch it.
- The screen will not stay in the channel because pins, leaf springs, or plunger bolts are gone.
- A frame that is diamond-shaped and rubs the sash.
- Pet damage at the bottom rail of a window the dog can reach.
What is actually failing
A window screen is spline, mesh, and a mitered or corner-staked frame, plus the hardware that holds it: tension springs, plunge pins, or turn clips. Fiberglass mesh is the common original, and ultraviolet light finishes it. Aluminum mesh holds up in a brighter exposure and looks sharper, with a slightly different view. Pet mesh is a heavier vinyl-coated polyester for the openings that keep getting a nose through them. The frame can be re-splined if it is still square and the groove is intact. A kinked rail or a corner that will not close gets a new frame built to the measured opening, not a bent one forced back in. Half screens, full screens, and casement wicket screens are different rectangles. We measure the one in your hand and the channel it has to sit in, because a screen that is “close” either falls out or bows the mesh into the glass.
Our repair process
Frames are cleaned, squared, and splined with even tension so the mesh is flat and the corners do not pucker. Hardware is replaced: the little parts are why a good screen ends up in a closet. New frames are cut, cornered, and splined to the size we measured, then test-fit in the opening before we leave. Color is matched as closely as the available enamel allows, and we will tell you when an old mill finish is going to look brighter than a chalked original. You get a screen that seats, stays, and can come out again when you want to clean the glass.
Why repair beats replacement
Screens are not a reason to buy windows. Re-screening is one of the smallest tickets on a house and one of the more visible. A new window package that happens to include screens is a very expensive way to stop mosquitoes. We repair the screen and leave the glass, the balances, and the trim alone. If the channel the screen sits in is crushed because the sash is out of adjustment, we will point at that too, so the new mesh is not immediately rubbed through.
Questions about window screens
Can you match a odd-sized double-hung half screen?
Yes. Half screens and full screens are both built to the opening. Odd sizes are normal in older Chicago windows.
Which mesh should I pick?
Fiberglass is the economical default. Aluminum is tougher in the sun. Pet mesh is for the window the animal already chose. We will recommend one after seeing the damage, not before.
Do you replace only the pins?
Yes. If the mesh is sound and the screen falls out, hardware is the whole job.
Can screens be done while you are here for glass or balances?
That is the best time. The sash is already accessible, and you are not paying a separate trip for a rectangle of mesh.
